Welcome New Member

Welcome to SEIU/NAGE Local 282, a union that puts its members first. We take seriously your economic well-being and the well-being of your family. We do this through our negotiations with the Commonwealth for better contract language that protects our members from unfair treatment, keeps our salaries competitive, and improves the working conditions for women and men.

This local represents over 4,000 men and women from over 20 different state agencies throughout Massachusetts. We do this with the aid of a very involved Executive Board of seven members, and with a network of over 105 Stewards and Contact People.

One of our primary tasks is to make sure that our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Commonwealth is being followed. We take great pains to make sure that our members are being treated fairly. This Local Union prefers to first try to resolve differences and settle problems informally. When this cannot be accomplished, we than may use the more formal grievance procedure.

On a more proactive note, we are always looking to improve our network of members and administrators with whom we can effectively communicate “to promote harmonious relations between the Union and the Employer” (from the Preamble of our Collective Bargaining Agreement). This sounds simple enough, but it is by no means easy. Good, honest and clear communication is required on both sides.

As a state employee, you will need to come to terms with the fact that your very job was born of the political process. Laws that the Legislature enacted created your job and every other state employee’s job. As such, this union is very active supporting elected officials that support your interests. Political party affiliation DOES NOT MATTER! What matters is that we will support lawmakers who have your interests at heart. If you want to learn more about this, check out the information about our POLITICAL ACTION TEAM (PAT).

I want to urge you to become as involved in your union as you can be. Use our new website to obtain information about this union, to find benefits for being a SEIU/NAGE Member, and to help improve the lives of all working people. After all, if we don’t take care of ourselves and each other, who will?
